The Public Services Introductory Diploma Level 1 is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to develop the key skills needed for a career in the Uniformed Public Services. This course provides valuable work experience opportunities, giving you a strong foundation for future employment.

You will explore the essential skills required for roles in the Police, Navy, Royal Marines, Security, Army, Royal Air Force, Fire Brigade, and Prison Services. The course covers aspects of physical fitness, personal health and well-being, and problem-solving skills โ€“ all crucial for success in public service roles. Youโ€™ll also learn essential map reading and navigation techniques, which are vital for many uniformed careers.

Through camping adventures, military foot drill, and teamwork exercises, as well as studying security, law, and employment opportunities, youโ€™ll gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of these professions. Our expert staff and industry-recognised qualification will provide you with the confidence and knowledge to take the next step toward an exciting and fulfilling career.

What will I do?

This course may cover topics, including:

  • Researching a Topic
  • Finding Out about Public Services
  • Taking Part in Fitness Testing
  • Carrying out Security Searches
  • Responding to an Incident
  • Contributing to Your Community
  • Taking Part in Sport and Adventurous Activities

During the year, you will take part in visits and activities which may include:

  • Presentations at the College by the RAF, Army, Navy, Police and Fire Service
  • Personal development activities with the Army

You will also have the opportunity to complete the below qualifications:

  • Earth Week โ€“ Tackling the Climate Emergency Level 1
  • First Aid Awareness Level 1
  • Digital Skills Level 1
  • Outdoor Skills Level 1
  • Work Readiness Skills Level 1

In addition to your course, you may also study either GCSE or Functional Skills English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

To study the Public Services Introductory Diploma Level 1, you will need 2 GCSEs at grades 2 or above (old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent, including English or Maths.

The Public Services Introductory Diploma Level 1 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college for up to 5 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston or our Peter Paine Performance Centre in Boston, plus approximately 24 hours of independent study per week.

The Public Services Introductory Diploma Level 1 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost ยฃ1500.

You will be assessed by a variety of methods, including observations, written assessments, discussions with tutors and workbooks.

Successfully completing the Public Services Introductory Diploma Level 1 can enable further education or employment. You may progress to higher level Uniformed Public Services courses, where you will develop advanced knowledge and practical skills. Alternatively, this qualification can help you pursue a career in the Armed Forces or related industries such as security, emergency services, or public safety. The skills gained in this course, including teamwork, problem-solving, and physical fitness, will prepare you for a wide range of opportunities, giving you the confidence to take the next step toward your future career.
