The City & Guilds Level 2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding) Diploma provides students with the essential skills and knowledge required for a career in metal fabrication and welding. Designed for those seeking entry-level roles in industries such as Construction, Automotive, and Heavy Machinery, this course offers a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on training.

You will develop a strong understanding of Health and Safety Protocols, Materials Science, and Engineering Calculations. This course includes knowledge and skills development in Practical Welding Techniques, including Arc Welding, TIG Welding, MIG Welding, and Sheet/Plate Welding. Additionally, you will learn to interpret engineering drawings using CAD techniques, enabling you to transform designs into high-quality metal structures.

Beyond technical skills, the course enhances digital literacy, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, ensuring students are well-prepared for real-world challenges. You will emerge as skilled, safety-conscious professionals, capable of producing precision metalwork that meets industry standards.

What will I do?

During the course, you may cover topics including:

  • Engineering Maths and Materials Science
  • Workshop Safety and Tool Use
  • Technical Drawings and Workplace Communication
  • Fabrication Principles and Processes
  • Welding Principles and Processes

In addition to your course, you may also study either GCSE or Functional Skills English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

To study the Fabrication and Welding Extended Technical Diploma Level 2, you will need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above (old GCSE grade D or above) or equivalent, including English, Maths, or Science.

The Fabrication and Welding Extended Technical Diploma Level 2 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college from 9:00am-4:30pm for 3-4 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston, plus independent study.

The Fabrication and Welding Extended Technical Diploma Level 2 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost Β£1500.

You will be assessed via theory exams and practical assessments.

Successfully completing the Fabrication and Welding Extended Technical Diploma Level 2 equips students with the skills needed to enter the workforce or continue their education. You will be employment-ready for roles such as Welder, Fabricator, or Metalworker in industries including shipbuilding, aerospace, and infrastructure. This qualification also provides a strong foundation for progression into Level 3 Engineering qualifications, allowing students to develop advanced technical expertise. Additionally, students can pursue Apprenticeships, gaining hands-on experience while further refining their skills in real-world industry settings.
