The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Photography is a practical and inspiring course designed for anyone interested in developing their creative and technical skills in photography. Whether you are looking to start a career, support your creative hobby, or progress into further study, this qualification provides an intermediate pathway in photographic equipment, image-making, and professional practice.

Throughout this course, you will explore how to use your DSLR or mirrorless camera, lenses, lighting, and editing software to create striking images. You will also research and adapt ideas, build your use of visual language, and choose to specialise in either studio photography or location photography, depending on your interests and aspirations.

You will produce a portfolio of high-quality photographic work, supported by written and practical evidence, that demonstrates your technical knowledge and personal creativity. At the end of the course, you will have developed a set of professional and transferable skills relevant to both the creative industries and higher levels of study.

What will I do?

The qualification consists of two mandatory units which are centred around photographic practice and developing and adapting photographic ideas.

In addition, there is one specialist unit where learners can specialise in a particular area of photography, these Include:

  • Dark Room Practice
  • Studio Practice
  • Location Photography Practice
  • Commercial Photography Practice
  • Documentary Photography
  • Experimental / Alternative Processes.

To study the Photography Certificate Level 2, you will need to have a Level 1 qualification in Photography and 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or above (old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent, including English or Maths.

Please note that you must have the appropriate equipment, such as a Digital SLR.

The Photography Certificate Level 2 will take you 30 weeks to complete. You will attend college for 2 hours on 1 day per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston. You will also be expected to undertake additional work at home in order to back up classroom activity.

The Photography Certificate Level 2 may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than ยฃ20,319 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for the Adult Educational Budget, this course will cost you ยฃ483.

You will be assessed via practical tasks, portfolio work, work-based evidence, and coursework.

Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress to a Level 3 qualification. Other potential progression routes include further study, employment (including entry-level roles in the creative industries), and Apprenticeships. Eligible candidates may also advance to our Higher Education courses.

Additional costs may include purchase of sketchbooks and study materials (approximately ยฃ30).
