The Level 1 Award in Photography is ideal for anyone with an interest in photography who wants to build on their basic skills and enhance the quality of their images. This hands-on course begins with an introduction to your camera, helping you understand its settings, functions, and creative potential. You will then explore core photographic styles such as portrait and landscape photography, gaining confidence through practical experimentation.

Throughout the course, you will study in a fully equipped photography studio and have access to professional facilities including a darkroom for traditional techniques and a computer suite for digital editing. Whether you are looking to pursue photography as a hobby or as a stepping stone toward further study, this course provides a solid foundation in both technical skills and creative expression.

What will I do?

During the course, you will study topics, including:

  • How to Use a Camera to Capture Creative Images
  • Introduction to Capturing and Producing Images of People
  • Introduction to Capturing and Producing Images of Landscapes

There are no formal entry requirements to study the Photography Award Level 1. However, you must have the appropriate equipment, such as a Digital SLR.

The Photography Award Level 1 will take you 20 weeks to complete. You will attend college from 6:00pm-8:00pm for 1 day per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston. You will also be expected to undertake additional work at home in order to back up classroom activity.

The Photography Award Level 1 may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than £20,319 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for the Adult Educational Budget, this course will cost you £191.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed via practical tasks, portfolio work, work-based evidence, and coursework.

Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress to our Level 2 evening course. Other potential progression routes include further study, employment (including entry-level roles in the creative industries), and Apprenticeships. Eligible candidates may also advance to our Higher Education courses.

Additional costs may include purchase of sketchbooks and study materials (approximately £30).
