Hairdressing and Barbering Certificate Level 1
Add to ShortlistThe VTCT Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering provides you with the foundational knowledge and practical skills to become a Hairdressing or Barbering Assistant. The course covers essential topics such as Preparing for Hair Services, Maintaining Clean and Organised Work Areas, and Supporting Effective Workplace Relationships. You will also gain hands-on experience in blow-drying, shampooing, and conditioning hair. This qualification provides a solid introduction to the hair industry and prepares students for further training or Entry Level roles in salons or barber shops.
What will I do?
During the course, you will cover topics including:
- Preparing for Hair Services and Maintaining Work Areas
- Contributing to the Development of Effective Working Relationships
- Blow Dry Hair
- Shampoo and Condition Hair
- Assisting with Salon Reception Services
- Assisting with Hair Colouring and Lightening
You will also have the opportunity to complete the below qualifications:
- Earth Week โ Tackling the Climate Emergency Level 1
- Head Massage Award Level 2
- Preventing Contact Dermatitis Award Level 2
- Skin Cancer Awareness for Non-Healthcare Professionals Award Level 2
In addition to your course, you may also study either GCSE or Functional Skills English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Attendance
The Hairdressing and Barbering Certificate Level 1 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college from 9:00am-4:30pm for 3-4 days per week at our Spalding Campus, plus independent study.
Fees
The Hairdressing and Barbering Certificate Level 1 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.
If you are aged 19+, this course will cost ยฃ1500.

How Will I Be Assessed
You will be assessed via practical observations on clients and workbooks.
Where Could It Lead?
Successful completion of the Hairdressing and Barbering Certificate Level 1 will equip you with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue a career in the hairdressing and barbering industries. You can progress onto a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing or Barbering.
