The Level 1 Award in Art, Design and Media (Graphics) course has been designed for adults looking to explore the exciting world of graphic design. Whether youโ€™re a complete beginner or someone looking to refresh your skills, this course provides a supportive and practical introduction to the tools, techniques, and thinking behind successful visual communication.

Gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop, and learn how to create striking visuals, posters and social media graphics. With an emphasis on real-world relevance, you will build confidence in your creativity while exploring key design principles like layout, typography, and colour theory.

Throughout the course, you'll be encouraged to develop your own design style while working on meaningful projects that connect to your interests, goals, or community. At the end of the course, you will have produced a small project that showcases your skills and creativity, ready to impress friends, family, potential employers, or customers.

What will I do?

During the course, you will study two units that form a coherent pattern of teaching and learning. These two units will provide you with an introduction to the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to explore, enhance and sustain your creative development in the field of graphic and digital design. The course is delivered in a practical way, but there is a requirement for some written work and research in order to achieve the qualification.

To study the Graphic Design Award Level 1, you will need to have 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or above (old GCSE grade E or above) or equivalent, including English or Maths.

The Graphic Design Award Level 1 will take you 21 weeks to complete. You will attend college for 2 hours on 1 evening per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston. You will also be expected to undertake additional work at home in order to back up classroom activity.

The Graphic Design Award Level 1 may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19+ on the 31st August at the start of the current academic year
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than ยฃ20,319 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for the Adult Educational Budget, this course will cost you ยฃ260.

Please note that all fees are subject to change.

You will be assessed via practical tasks, portfolio work, work-based evidence, and coursework.

Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress to our Level 2 evening course in the following year. Other potential progression routes include further study, employment (including entry-level roles in the creative industries), and Apprenticeships. Eligible candidates may also advance to our Higher Education courses.
