The YMCA Extended Technical Occupational Entry in Exercise and Fitness: Gym Instructor Diploma Level 2 is a widely recognised qualification and the industry benchmark for gym instruction. Earning this certification ensures that an instructor is competent, knowledgeable, and safe to train and develop clients effectively. It provides the essential skills needed to lead gym-based training sessions, offering a strong foundation in exercise programming, client support, and fitness instruction.

This course serves as a stepping stone for those aspiring to become personal trainers, preparing them for further education or advanced certifications. This qualification is ideal for individuals looking to begin or advance their careers in the fitness industry. Whether you aim to work in a gym, develop your own clientele, or pursue higher level fitness training, this course provides the essential groundwork for long term success.

Completion of this qualification provides students with 10 CIMSPA CPD points.

What will I do?

During the course, you will cover topics including:

  • Health Screening and Risk Stratification
  • Inducting Individual Clients and Small Groups
  • Gym Consultations
  • Plan a Gym-based Exercise Session
  • Deliver and Evaluate a Gym-based Exercise Session

There are no formal entry qualifications for this course. However, please note that you must be aged 19+.

Prior knowledge of sport and exercise will be beneficial due to the level of understanding of Anatomy and Physiology required for the qualification.

The Exercise and Fitness (Gym Instructor) Diploma Level 2 will take you approximately 24 weeks to complete, but this qualification can be completed sooner depending on course progression. You will attend college for 1 day per week at our Peter Paine Performance Centre in Boston.

The Exercise and Fitness (Gym Instructor) Diploma Level 2 may be fully funded by the Adult Education Budget should you be eligible under the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19 or older on the 31st August
  • Be either unemployed and receiving JSA, ESA or Universal Credit (subject to criteria) OR be earning less than ยฃ25,000 (annual gross salary) a year

If you do not qualify for funding this course will cost ยฃ441.

You will be assessed via practical assessments and theory assessments, including a portfolio, video assessments, practical observations, and online assessments.
