The Culture and Society A Level Pathway offers a dynamic and though-provoking combination of Sociology, History and Media, providing a deep understanding of how societies function, cultures evolve, and historical events shape the modern world. This pathway encourages discussion-based learning, critical debate, and exploration of the complexities of culture, identity, and history.
In A Level Sociology, you will explore social structures, institutions, and inequalities, gaining insights into cultural diversity and the societal influences that shape education. A Level History delves into the evolution of political systems, legal frameworks, and key events and figures that have shaped democracy and governance. A Level Media allows you to analyse media landscapes, develop critical thinking, and master communication skills in the digital age.
By integrating these subjects, this pathway prepares you for careers in fields such as journalism, media, social work, community development, and marketing โ all focusing on human behaviour, media influence, and historical change.
A Level Sociology:
Explore the intricate fabric of society, dissecting its structures, institutions, and interactions. Analyse fundamental concepts like culture, socialization, inequality, and power, understanding their impact on individuals and communities. The curriculum encompasses diverse sociological theories, from classical to contemporary perspectives, including Marx, Durkheim, Weber, and modern scholars. Investigate themes like social stratification, gender, ethnicity, education, family, and crime using qualitative and quantitative research methods to unravel societal phenomena.
A Level History:
Take an in-depth look at the course of modern German history. Starting with the birth of the German Empire, you will examine the timeline of German history up to the division of Germany after the 2nd World War. You will examine the political, economic, social and foreign relations that helped to define a powerhouse of modern Europe. After this, you will move on to looking at the landscape of Britain from the end of World War 2 through to the present day. You will dive into the political turmoil of Britain, examining the fundamental social and economic shifts that have helped define Britainโs place in the world today.
A Level Media:
Gain knowledge and understanding of key aspects of the theoretical framework as an essential basis for analysing media products from a variety of forms. You will develop knowledge and understanding of key aspects of media industries, including the significance of ownership and funding, the role of regulation in global production, the impact of digitally convergent platforms and the effect of individual producers on media industries. In addition, you will study media audiences, the categorisation and construction of audiences, as well as how audiences use and respond to the media.
To study the Culture and Society A Level Pathway you will need to have 5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above.
The Culture and Society A Level Pathway will take you 2 years to complete. You will attend college for 4 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston.
The Culture and Society A Level Pathway is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.
The Culture and Society A Level Pathway is assessed through a mix of examinations and coursework. Each one of the 3 A Levels that form the Culture and Society A Level Pathway is assessed individually:
Successful completion of the Culture and Society A Level Pathway will give you the skills and knowledge to progress on to the next step of your academic journey. You can progress to Higher Education, through a University Level course or an Apprenticeship, or directly into employment in your chosen career.
The Culture and Society A Level Pathway opens various career opportunities. In Journalism and Media, you can pursue roles in broadcasting, publishing, and digital media, shaping how information is shared. Social Work and Community Development offers paths in social services, counselling, and community outreach, where youโll support vulnerable individuals and promote societal well-being. In Marketing and Communications, careers in advertising, public relations, and corporate communications allow you to craft compelling messages and strategies, influencing public perception. These pathways allow you to explore human behaviour, media influence, and societal change in meaningful, impactful ways.
