Become an outstanding teacher in the FES sector! The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post-14 Further Education and Skills Level 5 is awarded by the University of Derby to vocationally qualified professionals seeking to become fully qualified teachers of students, primarily but not exclusively, aged 14 and above in the post-14 sector and other educational settings. The majority of FES teachers work in FE colleges (whether general or specialist), independent training providers (ITPs), Adult Community Learning (ACL) providers, or offender learning.

As a University of Derby partner student, you will have access to the university’s virtual learning environment, including University of Derby Online (UDO) and online journals and texts, as well as library facilities.

What will I do?

  • The Curriculum Explored
  • Investigating Subject Pedagogy

In order to study the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post-14 Further Education and Skills Level 5, you will need to have successfully completed:

  • A Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in the subject, or a related subject, that you plan on teaching
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above, which is recognised by the Society for Education and Training’s (SET) list of approved qualifications for QTLS

You must also have at least 75 hours of teaching across each year and be supported by a mentor. Volunteering can only count if it is in Boston College and all other requirements are met such as being supported by a mentor and that the volunteering runs across the whole year.

All applications are subject to approval by the University of Derby (UoD). In order for the University to approve your application we are required to share your personal information. This includes sharing the application form that you have completed to study this course, and in some instances, copies of your maths, English and highest-level qualification certificate.

The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post-14 Further Education and Skills Level 5 will take you 2 years to complete. You will attend college for 3 hours per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston, plus independent study.

The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post-14 Further Education and Skills Level 5 will cost you £3460 per year.

During the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) Post 14 Further Education and Skills Level 5 each module will be assessed on 50% practical and 50% theory.

The majority of trainees completing programmes are successfully appointed to teaching posts across the sector. Many trainees move on quickly to become course leaders/managers of the subject area.

Upon completion of the Certificate in Education you can progress onto the PGCE from which you will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status via the Society for Education and Training.
