The Animal Studies Extended Certificate Level 2 is ideal for anyone passionate about animal care and looking to build on their existing knowledge. This course allows you to focus on a small number of specialized units while receiving dedicated support to complete assignments successfully. You will study both practical and theoretical aspects of animal care, making it an excellent choice if you require additional guidance after completing the Animal Studies Certificate Level 1.

As a Boston College student, you will benefit from hands-on experience at our specialist Animal Care Unit, where you can apply your learning in a real-world setting. Whether you aspire to further study or seek a career in animal care, this course provides the perfect stepping stone for your future.

What will I do?

During the course, you will cover topics including:

  • Maintaining Animal Accommodation
  • Undertaking Practical Animal Feeding
  • Maintaining Animal Health and Welfare
  • Introduction to the Principles and Practices of Animal Behaviour and Handling

You will also undertake 15-30 hours of internal work experience alongside your studies at the College. During the course, you will also have the opportunity to complete the below qualifications:

  • Biology Preparation for T Levels Level 2
  • Earth Week โ€“ Tackling the Climate Emergency Level 2
  • Work Ready Skills Level 2

In addition to your course, you may also study either GCSE or Functional Skills English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.

To study the Animal Studies Extended Certificate Level 2 you will need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above (old GCSE grade D or above) or equivalent, including English and Maths, or Functional Skills Level 1 in English and Maths.

The Animal Studies Extended Certificate Level 2 will take you 1 year to complete. You will attend college from 9:00am-4:30pm for 3-4 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston. You will also be expected to complete 15-30 hours of internal work experience, plus independent study.

The Animal Studies Extended Certificate Level 2 is free, if you are under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start the course.

If you are aged 19+, this course will cost ยฃ1500.

You will be assessed via practical assessments, course work, presentations and discussions.

Successful completion of the Animal Studies Extended Certificate Level 2 opens doors to further education and career opportunities in the animal care sector. Students who achieve this qualification can progress onto other Animal Management courses, where they will expand their knowledge and practical skills. This next level provides a deeper understanding of animal welfare, behaviour, and health. Alternatively, you may seek entry-level employment in pet care, animal rescue centres, kennels, or farms. Whether continuing education or entering the workforce, this course provides a solid foundation for a rewarding future in animal care.
