Develop the skills and knowledge required to be successful in both the Uniformed and Non-uniformed Public Services with the Pearson BTEC Public Services HND Level 5. Gain a deeper understanding of the roles within various services, such as the Prison Service, the Criminal Justice System, Women’s Refuge, the Emergency Services, and the Military. Explore a wide range of areas, including Mental Health and Wellbeing, Crime and Substance Misuse, Psychology and Inter-disciplinary Responses to Emergencies, to provide you with an essential understanding of the diverse opportunities available in the public services sector.

Boston College has strong partnerships with a range of local organisations, offering students valuable insight into diverse roles within public service settings. Immerse yourself in educational visits and guest speakers from organisations such as the Samaritans, Women’s Refuge, East Midlands Ambulance Service, the Restorative Justice team, and Lincoln Crown Court. Students may also have the chance to volunteer with Lincolnshire Police, including involvement in their Stop and Search programme. These experiences not only bring classroom learning to life but also provide valuable networking opportunities and first-hand knowledge from industry professionals.

What will I do?

During your first year, you will study a Level 4 HNC. Upon successful completion of the first year, you will then progress on to the second year to study the Level 5 HND.

  • Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Ethics
  • Planning a Public Services Project (Pearson Set)
  • Crime and Substance Misuse
  • Third Sector and Public Services
  • Crime and the Media
  • On-scene Emergency Response
  • Professional Development
  • Research Project

In order to study the Public Services HND Level 5, you will need to have successfully completed:

  • An MMP at Level 3 in a related subject, or Access to Higher Education qualification, or an A Level equivalent (minimum 80 new UCAS points) in related subjects
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above, or Functional Skills Level 2 and/or minimum IELTS score of 6

Please note that individual cases will be considered.

The Public Services HND Level 5 will take you 2 years to complete. You will attend college for 2 days per week at our Rochford Campus in Boston or our Peter Paine Performance Centre in Boston, plus approximately 24 hours of independent study per week.

The Public Services HND Level 5 will cost £7100 per year.

Assessment is via practical observations, written reports, presentations, interview, posters, group-based work, and video presentations.

The assessment of Pearson's Higher National qualifications are criterion-referenced and you will provide evidence in the form of assignments, which are assessed against the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

The Pearson HND courses are highly valued by employers and can lead to careers specialisms. Progression onto an undergraduate degree or further professional qualifications in a related area are possible.

Successfully completing this qualification will enhance your career prospects in public service settings. The qualification will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed for a variety of roles in public services such as: the Probation Service, the Criminal Justice System, Crime Prevention, Police, Civil Service and Security.

In addition to improving your employment opportunities, this qualification also serves as an opportunity of progression to gain a full Bachelor’s Degree. You will have the option to progress onto a Level 6 Top-up qualification.
