South West China Welcomes Boston College

In April 2010, along with six other, East Midlands Colleges Boston College visited several vocational and technical colleges in the cities of Chongqing and Chengdu. The purpose of the visit was to develop partnerships in Hospitality, Catering, Travel and Tourism. The programme was organised by the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC).

The Boston College delegates were, Steve Cottrell and Tony Flanagan. They had the opportunity to meet with college Principals, Deputy Principals, Heads of Department, and teaching staff to explore how educational relationships might be progressed. Meetings focused on the possibilities of collaborative projects, staff-student exchange, and the sharing of curriculum design, teaching resources, teaching methodology and assessment processes. There were also opportunities to tour college facilities, observe classes and speak with students.

Steve and Tony were very appreciative of the warm hospitality offered by the Chinese colleges, which included being treated to the distinctive culinary delights of the Chinese ‘hotpot’.

One of the highlights of the visit was to see the vegetable carvings sculpted by Chongqing Tourism School students.

UK delegates also benefited from an initial briefing at the British Consulate-General in Chongqing and, at the end of a week, a meeting with the Sichuan Provincial Department of Education in Chengdu.

A reciprocal visit to the UK is planned for October 2010, which will give Chinese delegates the opportunity to see Boston College in action.

Tears and Smiles in India

A group of Boston College international and local students and two members of staff returned home in June after a successful 10 day trip to India. All the students expressed that this was a life-changing experience and truly opened their eyes to other cultures within the world.

During the ten days, the group experienced an elephant ride, fed wild monkeys and visited many of India’s tourist attractions, including the Taj Mahal. They also had the opportunity to meet the students at three very different schools; a wealthy private school, a government run city school and a village school.

“It has been a life changing experience that I will never forget!”

The Programme aims to:
• Recognise imaginative and innovatory teaching and learning practice in colleges.
• Draw attention to provision which encourages students to confront problems and issues creatively.
• Highlight the breadth and quality of education in colleges throughout the UK.
• Support learning and continuous improvement through the dissemination of Award-bearing practice.

Boston College has previously (2003-4) won a Beacon Award for School-College Partnership work, and been highly commended for provision of English and Maths for adults (Skills for Life). This year’s programme saw Boston College presented with a Beacon Award for International provision in recognition of our successful courses for people from abroad studying in Boston.

The College has been recruiting international students for 16 years and in the academic year 2005 to 2006, 195 students from 22 countries enrolled. Assessors said Boston College “provision for international students is an outstanding example of support in every aspect”.

College Principal Sue Daley said : “The British Council Award for International student support is an award that recognises top level achievement of college work and the way the college supports students, particularly the ones that come from other countries. We are really delighted that we have been given this recognition of the support we provide to help students overcome any barriers they might face and to help them succeed in their courses.”
