If you are aiming for a career in the uniformed services (the Army, Navy, Police or Fire Service for example), these courses offer useful pre-entry skills, knowledge and life skills necessary to achieve your goal. You will learn about the level of fitness you need to achieve and take part in practical sports and leadership training. You will also study various subjects to enhance the contribution you can make to your future employment and can, for example, take entry tests with several public services.

Visits to public service organisations are a regular part of the programme and include work experience with the Army. Educational visits may be within the UK or abroad. Successful National Diploma students may choose to apply directly to one of the services or continue their studies at Higher Education level.

From Strength to Strength

Uniformed Public Services tutors at Boston College have a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share with students. Alan Brickwood served for 22 years in the Corps Royal Engineers as an Engineer Logistic Specialist, with tours of duty in countries as far afield as Canada, Cyprus and Belize. Before coming to Boston College, Alan received a commendation for his work with the Army in the Former Yugoslavia, followed by a stint working with young people who had been excluded from school.

Success

Last year, most students went on to apply for the services. 5 students were accepted onto a related degree course at Buckingham University alone! Our busy students have taken up challenges including Police riot training in Cambridge, a fitness and problem solving experience with the Royal Marines, a stay aboard HMS Bristol in Portsmouth with the Royal Navy, plus a residential ‘Outward Bound’ trip, and competed in  many National competitions.

general 113Case Study : Elaine Pears

Elaine completed her first year on the National Diploma in Uniformed Public Services with the aim of one day joining the forces.

“I really enjoyed the team work element as well as the exhibitions we had to attend. All of which really helped when putting my application in to the Army. I made a lot of good friends whilst on the course all of which have moved on to a career in the forces”.

Having completed her training Elaine is now packing her bags and moving to Gutersloh in Germany where she will be a part of the Royal Adjutants Corp, a part of the close support regiment.

At only 18 she has a good future ahead of her “Boston College has been a great stepping stone and has helped me start the career I wanted. You gain great support and valuable experience. It definitely helped me”.
