Thanks to our experienced staff, Boston College has long been associated with high-quality training of Hair and Beauty professionals. Excellent facilities support the training needs of hundreds of people every year: the department boasts three specialist hairdressing salons, three fully equipped beauty rooms, a nail studio, wet room and a large reception area, all open to the public.
For those specialising in Hairdressing, practical skills and techniques covered will include: cutting, colouring, perming, dressing long hair, temporary hair setting and team building, alongside reception skills. Beauty Therapy involves a wide range of skills including manicure, pedicure, skincare, massage, holistic therapies, use of electrical equipment and make-up. There are regular, friendly competitions, giving you the opportunity to experiment with new styles and techniques. All the courses include study of background theory and business skills.
When it comes to teaching, our staff are still very much working in the real world, and updating their skills all the time. Tutors come from a variety of industry backgrounds; from Hairdressing Salon owners, to Beauty Therapists with cruise-liner experience. They all strive to keep up to date with new techniques and technology by taking part in training and continuing professional development.
Hairdressing and Beauty students achieve great success at Boston College, with achievement rates being above national benchmarks. Students also have the opportunity to undertake work experience and have a selection test with large employers such as Steiner cruise lines and Ragdale Hall health spa.
Case Study : Vicky BlackamoreWith aspirations of running a mobile beauty business, Vicky found herself enrolling on a Beauty course at Boston College straight from finishing her studies at Thomas Cowley High School.
“The transition from school to college was an easy one; group activities meant that we were able to form real bonds from day one. Having started on the Level 1 Beauty course meant I started with the real basics and could build up my confidence with clients, I am now finishing my level 3 and feel I am ready to move into the industry”.
“Over the years I have learnt a variety of treatments from facials to full body massages. We get to build up our own client base, and work within a real salon environment. Working in this type of environment and with tutors who have been really supportive, passing on their own trade experiences and knowledge has been extremely helpful”.
