Many people decide they would like to go back into education at a higher level, but find they do not have the necessary qualifications or lack confidence.
The college offers Two Access to Higher Education programmes:
Access to Higher Education Diploma
Access to Health and Social Care: Nursing and Midwifery
The courses have been developed to help adult learners open the door to Higher Education. Validated by the Open College Network East Midlands Region, the courses are nationally recognised and successful students may apply to any university or college in the country, and to Nursing or Midwifery training. This course is equivalent to 3 A levels.
Students learn in a friendly and supportive environment where they are able to gain confidence and fully prepare themselves for progression to Higher Education.
Learners study on a full-time basis of 15 hours per week, usually 4 or 5 days per week (course may be studied part-time over two years) between the hours of 9am-3pm.
All learners study core subjects; Maths, English, IT and Study Skills. Option subjects may include; Biology, Psychology, Sociology, Business, Computing, History, Law, English Literature and Mathematics.
Large numbers of our students gain places on Higher Education courses in areas like nursing and teacher training, as well as general degree courses. Students on this course consistently achieve high pass rates.
Case Study : Mark ClarkHaving ambitions to earn money so he could travel Mark decided to go straight into work after completing his GCSEs. After 6 months he decided to go to Ukraine to work with children in a summer camp for 2 weeks and then continued his work at a school for a few more months.
“My experience in Ukraine inspired me so much that I developed a passion to teach and with a strong interest in religion, I liked the idea of teaching religious studies at secondary level.”
“I found out about the Access course and realised that is was the perfect route to get me into university. The programme is very flexible so there is the option to work as well as study and it is nice to work with other adult learners who have come back into education.”
Mark is due to finish his course at Boston College and has been accepted at one of the top 20 Universities in the UK, The University of Glasgow.
“Once I have finished university I plan to take a teaching qualification and eventually move abroad to teach, ideally somewhere warm.”
