This course enables you to obtain an internationally recognised advanced diploma qualification in Beauty Therapy which has given previous students the employment opportunities and skills needed to work in commercial beauty salons as therapists and senior therapists and for those students who want more adventure, the career options of working in prestigious health spas on land or at sea on cruise liners.
The Beauty department at Boston College works in partnership with a prestigious skin care company, Eve Taylor, to deliver unique skincare training in anyone of our two fully equipped training salons, which are open as commercial salons to the general public.
The College commercial salons run several times a week and will include possible evening salon sessions to cater for all.
There is also throughout the year supervised opportunities to work in a varied environment within the community outside the College salon.
What will I do?
The course is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist. You must achieve all mandatory units which include:
- Health and Safety in the Salon
- Client Care and Consultation
- Body Analysis
- Skin Analysis
- Swedish Massage Therapy
- Body lectrical Treatment
- Facial Electrical Treatment
- Electrical Science
- Mechanical Massage
- Anatomy and Physiology for the Face and Body Systems
You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. You will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, successfully promote and retail products, provide a range of beauty treatments including Swedish massage, skin and body analysis and electrical science in order to make informed decisions for face and body electrical treatments. In parallel, you will develop your communication and customer service skills, your awareness of environmental sustainability and your commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.
In addition to your course, you will also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade.
You will also be expect to complete 1-2 full weeks of work experience, as well as having the opportunity to undertake trade tests for work experience in a prestigious health farm,
You will have access to information on study skills and the opportunity to attend study support groups. The average group size is 14-16 students.
Successful completion of a previous Beauty Therapy Level 2 qualification (or equivalent), with a satisfactory report from all previous beauty tutors and successful completion of an interview and taster session, in which attendance (minimum 90%), acceptable behaviour/attitude, ability to progress and ability to meet deadlines will be taken into consideration.
This course is free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.

If you are aged 19 years or over on the 1st day of your course, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with your College fees. If you progress to employment you won't have to pay anything back until you’re earning £21,000 per year. Your household income isn't taken into account and there's no credit check. This course will take you 1 year, September to June, to complete. You will study at College for a minimum 4 days a week, 9.00am-4.30pm.
You will need a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the year, in order for you to successfully complete the qualification.
